washington, d.c. to be a huge amount of people gather on the washington mall. in 2009 was all the way from the capitol all the way to the lincoln memorial. we just lost our picture. there we go. and there of course for the inauguration. people gather to watch and other places as well. in a times square in new york city and in classrooms around the country in paris and iraq, in afghanistan people are watching the u.s. presidential inauguration. they've all come there. there is a big crowd on the mall. ayaan going to speak to you today about this great historic subject, this great american institution. and i am going to do it in the same way in which i organized the book. the book is not chronological. it's not divided that starts off with george washington and then john adams and guinn for the president. instead, its slash the various parts of the day, and within each part of the day i sprinkle with vignettes some of the very serious and some of them traditional. a lot of them are all events because i'm always looking for those. i'm also going to cover some things that we are not going to s

was a couple of days' ride from monticello to washington. he stopped at an inn and falls into a conversation with a fellow guest and they have a lovely, wide ranging discussion the next morning the other guest mr. jefferson is up and out and the other guest had never called his name and he said to the inn keeper who was that and he said who did you think it was? for a while and you knew so much about medicine i thought he was a doctor. then we talked about theology and he seemed as though he might be a priest though a shaky one. i thought he could have been certainly a farmer because of everything he knew and he said i thought you knew mr. jefferson. he was a master of so many different worlds and he was indefinitely curious at the time when human curiosity and the ability to lead us to our own destiny to fulfil in many ways our greatest potentials to discover, to explore was new in the world and this was the enlightened era. they had been a day before yesterday. for the first time ever, priestley and princely authority was in the dhaka, and jefferson was there to reap the harve

newtown, connecticut. nearly all of the senators and congress have left washington dc. from all over the country, there were outpouring of condolences and sympathy and there were senators and congressmen who sent out statements calling for gun control. in some cases with no political desions by many to politicize the tragedy. here are some of their names and what they said. congressman bobby rush said lawmakers can no longer be hel hostage by those who are opposed to reasonable gun control laws. congressman eliot engel of new york, the fact that we cannot pass sensible gun control in this congress is a blot on her reputation. and congressmen jery nadler saying that now is not the time to have a serious discussion abouand control, if not now, when would it be? at least 20 members of congress reacting with calls to restrict constitutional rights to bear arms. all over those calls coming from members of the democratic party. here is the number who chose to talk about mental illness. the disaffection of the mentally disturbed and ill. the importance of a strong family and how better to prote

washington but met chris 26 years ago at hastings law school, two blocks from here. we were in the same section in the same study group. when we finished law school we both went to the east coast to work for large law firms. over the years we stayed in close touch. when chris was back from over seas we were frequent tennis partners and would get together for dinners and other events in washington. over the years our families became friends as well. it's been such a pleasure to come to know them and chris's many friends in washington and to watch his career unfold. we met on the first day of school. i sat down in our civil procedure class next to a person who turned out to be named chris highland. shortly thereafter chris stevens sat down next to me. the three of us went to lunch afterwards and became friends from that day forward. chris never tried to be someone special but he was someone special. when we were at hastings his charm and wit were on display from the start. in class he was very articulate and seemed as later in life always very poised and well spoken and at ease. i think o

understand the fiction in washington. it is a trillion dollars more taxes paid. there was a trillion dollars less of an increase of what we had previously expected to have. tax cut is fiction and washington. he cannot agree to a deal that is not acceptable to a majority of his majority. meteorologist tom kierein. hey, tom, welcome back. >> thank you. and there is the view over washington now. visibilities have improved at least around the metro area, though it is still a rather thick fog around annapolis and parts of the bay. a little overcast in that live picture there. there's reagan national to the right where visibility is now about three miles. let's take a look at what has been happening since about 5:00 this morning. you had those morning sprinkles move off to the south and east. cloud cover will be with us throughout the rest of the afternoon. these are the latest visibilities. reagan national up to four-mile visibility. annapolis still as zero visibility. quarter-mile at bwy. these are visibilities in tenths of a mile. looks a bit better to our west. but the general trend is that the visibilities are improving. right now still a chill in the air. we're just generally in the 40s to right around 50 degrees. reagan national now is at 51. cold change coming later this week. we'll take a look at that. the seven-day outlook is coming up in just a couple of minutes. bac
